A good harbour walk deserves a good coffee

Its getting to be a hot summer again this year in Sydney and as much as I’d like to blame the heat for the lack of posts, I’ll just blame the over-indulgence in ice-coffees instead… and there’s no better way to work off an ice coffee than have to walk for it first.

Problem is, this is how the conversation normally goes when we want to go walking…

Let’s get out for a walk…      …yeah let’s go for a coffee

There’s a fab walk over that direction just about 20mins away…    …fab, anywhere for a coffee there?

We’ll find out when we get there…     …could we not get a coffee first?         …and so it continues

I’ve done it too many times, telling myself I can smell the beans on the way… the exertion will be worth it… only to get there and bam, nothing. So I have started to keep an eye out for good coffee spots on our walking trails.

So an easy start : Middle Head Harbour… where 5.2km (2.5hrs) will take you past four nice spots to choose from depending how you feel.

  • From Middle Head Road (ref star on the map), take the path through the bushland until you reach the roundabout by Chowder Bay. (0.5km)

1.

If you’d like to start the walk with a coffee, the first cafe is at the roundabout you’ll reach, and its called Bacinos.

AND if you keep going towards the water at this point, down the stairs, you’ll find another Bacinos on the right, beside the beach. (0.2km)

2.  Now you’re either caffeined up, or wanting to keep going… head back towards the first Bacinos and you’ll be on Chowder Bay Road. Keep walking until you get to the Middle Head Oval, and there’s another small café on the green, on the righthand side. (1.5km)

Go right for an easy loop around the old fort, and harbour views. (1.7km)

3.  Burnt Orange  will be next past the HMAS Penguin, back on to Middle Head Harbour rd. This one is slightly more of a restaurant cafe. (0.2km)

4.  The next of these is a French café called Frenchy’s …. with pretty tasty french food I have to admit (I had the quiche of the day – well worth the walk).

Their coffee is pretty good too, but unfortunately their ice-coffee lets them down… coffee syrup and milk does not an ice-coffee make… and you may be waiting a while to get served. (1km)

Not a bad set though to choose from when bushwalking around Sydney harbour!
